A. Master's degree in Political Science
The Institute of Political Science currently offers two master's programmes: (1) a master's degree in general political science and (2) a specialised master's degree in comparative Swiss politics.D
1. "Master of Arts in Political Science"
The Master of Arts in Political Science programme comprises a total of 120 ECTS credits, with 90 ECTS credits allocated to the major in political science and 30 ECTS credits to a minor of the student's choice. The Master's major in political science consists of compulsory elective courses in seven subject areas, a compulsory semester at a foreign-language university and the Master's thesis. Upon successful completion, the title ‘Master of Arts in Political Science, University of Bern’ is awarded.
2. "Master of Arts in Schweizer Politik im Vergleich - Swiss and Comparative Politics"
The Institute of Political Science also offers a single-subject Master's programme (90 ECTS, without minor) in ‘Swiss Politics in Comparison’. Five areas of specialisation are offered. Your Master's thesis will relate to Swiss politics and address one of the five areas of specialisation. The programme focuses on acquiring in-depth political science knowledge of Swiss politics and its institutions, as well as specific policy areas in the Swiss context. Upon successful completion, the title ‘Master of Arts in Political Science, Swiss and Comparative Politics, University of Bern’ is awarded. There is the option to attend courses in Lausanne.
B. Master in Sociology
3. "Master of Arts in Sociology"
The major in sociology at the master's level lasts three semesters. It is a single subject (i.e. without a minor) and consists of courses worth 60 ECTS credits and a master's thesis worth 30 ECTS credits. Upon successful completion, the title ‘Master of Arts in Sociology, University of Bern’ is awarded.
Registration process
Students from Bern can register for a Master's programme as before by checking the semester control sheet. The ZIB then checks whether the degree has been obtained and whether a placement test is necessary. If a placement test is necessary, the procedure is the same as for external students.
